SpinRel® Rare Earth Free Motor

Rare earths, in its acronym REE Rare Earth Metals, are a group of elements part of the metal family. 17 of these elements, were discovered between 1839 and 1900. Rare earths include: Scandium, Yttrium and the 15 lanthanides, or following the periodic table, Lanthanum, Cerium, Praseodymium, Neodymium, Promethium, Samarium, Europium, Gadolinium, Terbium, Dysprosium, Holmium, Erbium, Thulium, Ytterbium and Lutetium. The term ‘rare earths’ was assigned not because of their scarcity in nature but because of their difficult identification, the complexity of the extraction and their processing process.

What are rare earths used for?

Rare earths, an important subject of discussion these days, are used in many sectors including: aerospace, industrial, home appliance, defense and automotive, especially in the electric and hybrid world. Rare earths are present in many components such as: rechargeable batteries, permanent magnets for wind turbines and for the construction of electric motors, in TVs and LCDs and are present in most electronic devices. Think of the new advanced technologies in the aerospace, defense and renewable energy fields.

In the field of electromechanical devices, rare earths are used to produce permanent magnets NdFeB and SmCo, that are used in electric motors and generators for electric traction, movement systems in vehicles, thermal management, motor pumps, factory automation, air conditioners, hard disks, and all types of generators.

A new generation of Synchronous Reluctance Motor without Rare Earths

The idea of SpinRel® was born in 2018 from an idea of Spin’s CEO Alessandro Tassi, who had founded a consultancy firm, to study new technologies in the world of electricity. The idea was working towards the transition towards a more sustainable and “silent” motor world.

Studying new electric motor technologies, specifically the synchronous reluctance motor, we faced the possibility of patenting an innovative technology, a project free of rare earths, putting a new generation of synchronous reluctance motor on the market. This new generation of motor would have to meet the following prerequisites: efficiency, robustness, high density, environmental sustainability, competitive production costs and silence. To meet all these needs, Spin’s technical department has examined all the electromagnetic, thermal, vibro-acoustic and mechanical aspects by designing, industrializing and patenting the internal technology of the engine.

The birth of SpinRel® and Green Silence Group

In 2022, the three companies Spin, Motive and Settima Meccanica decided to build Green Silence Group to respond to the need for a global energy transition that requires the adoption of environmentally conscious and more efficient technologies. An approach in line with the direction of clean energy, with a focus on the development of low-noise, high-efficiency and energy recovery systems capable of optimizing performance while minimizing environmental impact and operating costs.

SpinRel® was born, an electric motor free of rare earths, capable of leading the global energy transition and responding to specific needs: low noise to protect the environment, reduce energy waste and recover energy where possible, maximize energy efficiency, recyclability of components and reduce CO2 emissions.

Today SpinRel®, an electric motor free of rare earths, is produced by Green Silence Group for the automotive sector, ideal for electric/hybrid vehicles, agricultural machinery, goods handling, hydraulic systems on vehicles and many other applications.

SpinRel® has been optimized for Settima Meccanica ultra-silent pumps to offer an ultra-silent and innovative system in the electro-hydraulic world.
